There are 36 billion barrels of oil used every year in the world.

The 8 billion people in the world use a lot of oil. The United States uses 20 million of the 100 million barrels of oil used each and every day. Oil is used mostly for transportation. Such as gas and jet fuel.

And 10% is used for 6000 products that most of us take for granted and use every single day. From our toothbrush, our toothpaste, our clothes, and the plastics for keeping food fresh and free of germs. All made from the (some call evil) oil we harvest from mother earth.

This is amazing to me and should be to you as well.

Below is a graphic that shows what a barrel of oil is used for.

Here are some of the ways petroleum is used in our everyday lives.

We don’t think about all the products that are dependent on fossil fuels. And most of us take them for granted.

By the way, steel for our cars (and electric cars too) is very dependent on coal as part of the material for making it. And often for the extreme heat needed to make steal.

Here is just a partial list of the 6,000 things we use every day.

All plastic is made from petroleum and plastic is used almost everywhere: in cars, houses, toys, computers, and clothing. Asphalt used in road construction is a petroleum product as is the synthetic rubber in the tires. Paraffin wax comes from petroleum, as do fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, detergents, phonograph records, photographic film, furniture, packaging materials, surfboards, paints, and artificial fibers used in clothing, upholstery, and carpet backing.
